Governor Paterson Calls for Zero-Growth Budget
With the state facing a $5.4 billion deficit in the coming fiscal year, and a projected $24 billion deficit over the next three years, Governor Paterson called for state agencies to submit zero-growth budgets earlier this month.
Wall Street Turmoil May Lead to Further Cuts
Now, with growing troubles on Wall Street, the Governor is warning that he may need to call the Legislature back into session to make further cuts before Election Day. On August 19th, lawmakers cut $427 million from the budget.
In an interview with cable television station NY1, Paterson said, “I would not be surprised if the budget deficit we just cut down may skyrocket back up, and I may have to call on the Legislature to come back and grapple with it again.”
New Siena Poll Examines Presidential Race, Governor’s Approval Rating, and the Future of the state Senate
A poll released by the Siena Research Institute shows Barack Obama’s once double-digit lead on John McCain has shrunk to just five points in the race for the White House. Obama’s lead is down from eight points in August, 13 points in July and 18 points in June, when he led 51-33 percent.
Gov. David Paterson continues to enjoy strong support from voters, with a 59-13 percent favorable rating and a 51-37 percent positive job performance rating.
The poll also said New York likely voters are evenly divided (44-44 percent) on whether they want to see Republicans continue to control the state Senate or have the Democrats take control.
Skelos: No tax Increase to Address State’s Fiscal Situation
State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos released a statement on Tuesday saying that he ‘strongly supports the Governor’s efforts on behalf of AIG and believes we must continue to do all we can to prevent further deterioration of the financial sector.’
Skelos also said that in a fragile economy, it would be disastrous to raise taxes, as it would only exacerbate the crisis we face.
